All Groups Begin First Games Week of 2/12********************************************************
The Newport Beach Surf Dawg lacrosse program begins its ninth year offering youth lacrosse instruction and competition to the Newport Beach community. The majority of kids in the program go on to play high school lacrosse at all of the area high schools. For the past 8 years, the top players at both Corona Del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools learned the game as Surf Dawgs.
The Surf Dawg program was established in 2003 and its curriculum was put together by G.W. Mix, a former NCAA Coach of the Year, Major League Lacrosse general manager, and current volunteer head coach at Corona del Mar High School. In addition to Coach Mix, the Surf Dawg program is under the direction of former NCAA standout midfielder Andy Chalupa. The balance of the coaching staff includes a number of former NCAA All-Americans, MCLA college club players and local high school standouts. The program combines high level instruction in the fundamentals of the game with selected competition against other well-managed programs throughout Orange County, as well as some teams from Los Angeles, Ventura and San Diego.
In past years, the Surf Dawgs participated in the OCLA Winter League. Due to significant scheduling conflicts, we changed the format of our program last year.
The plan for this year will be very similar to last season. We will begin practices in early January. Each age group (2nd-4th, 5th-6th and 7th-8th) will practice at least two days each week. By early February, we will schedule a series of jamboree "play days" with at least two games for each age group at the same location. Many of these games will be in Newport. If we do have to travel, we will travel as a program and play multiple games. Under this system, we are able to control the quality of our opponents, where we play and when we play. We have found this format to be much better for our kids and more convenient for our parents.
We look forward to having your son run with Dawgs this season.

Former Surf Dawg Michael Ortlieb joins the Crusade
Michael Ortlieb and Holy Cross head coach Jim Morrissey had reason to be extra thankful over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Ortlieb's commitment to play college lacrosse at Holy Cross, and the Crusader's commitment to the Sea Kings' senior goalie, was finalized when he received a phone call from the Office of Admissions welcoming him to the Holy Cross family just before the Thanksgiving holiday began."We are all very excited for Michael," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "I was confident his switch from attack to goalie a year ago would make us a better team and thought it would give him a better chance to play lacrosse at a high level in college. It was a selfless decision on his part, and it is always rewarding to see leadership moments meet success."
Ortlieb was a two-year starter at attack, and a First-Team All-League selection in the Pacific Coast League as a sophomore. Prior to his junior season, Mix sat down with him and discussed the possibility of him moving from attack to goalie to give the Sea Kings the best chance at success during the 2011 season.
"He didn't hesitate," said Mix. "That's the type of young man he is. Michael is a "what's best for the team is what's best for me" kinda player. It's rare to see such unselfish leadership from kids these days."
In addition to Holy Cross, Ortlieb considered several schools, including taking an official recruiting visit to the United States Naval Academy.
"I chose Holy Cross because it is a highly selective institution that offers excellent academics as well as competitive athletics," Ortlieb responded when asked why he selected Holy Cross. "In addition, the Patriot League has always been something that I have wanted to be apart of," he added.
Ortlieb becomes the second member of the Class of 2012 to commit to play Division I college lacrosse. Michael Keasey (Sr./Midfield) will play in the Ivy League at Yale University. In the past three years, CDM has sent six players on to play college lacrosse at the elite level. Ortlieb and Keasey join Noah Molnar (2009/Lehigh University), Ryan Mix (2010/Notre Dame), Blake Burkhart (2011/PG Year at Deerfield Academy/Rutgers University), and Donald Dalton (2011/Drexel University).
"The recruiting experience is eye-opening to say the least, Ortlieb said. "I had the opportunity to visit multiple campuses and meet very interesting people and coaches who were apart of their respective programs. However having said that, it is a challenge to ultimately not have complete control of the process. The most important thing I have learned from the recruiting process is that being patient will pay off in great dividends."
"I am looking forward to new experiences, meeting new people, and continuing my commitment to excellence in the class room and on the field."
