Sea Kings are Orange County champions!

On a cool evening in South Orange County, the Sea Kings turned up the heat on San Clemente and captured CDM's first ever Orange County and CIF Southern Section South Division Championships.

A reported crowd of 3,500 were treated to an outstanding game of high school lacrosse.

The Kings (23-0) scored first, on a goal from senior attackman Hunter Molnar, and led from start to finish, earning a 9-6 victory over #3 seed San Clemente (15-7).

"This was a great night for our program and for Corona del Mar high school," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "We try to hold ourselves accountable to a high a standard of excellence in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the community. It's always special when the kids are rewarded for doing things the right way. It doesn't always work out this way."

Molnar, who finished the game with three goals, added his second in the first quarter to give CDM a 2-0 lead. The Tritons answered back with two goals in the final three minutes of the period to tie the game at 2.

In perhaps its best display of lacrosse all season, CDM's offense and defense came together to dominate San Clemente in the second period 5-1. Staying true to the Sea Kings' style, five different players scored in the quarter: Brett Nelson (Jr/Midfield), Michael Keasey (Sr/Midfield), Chris Von Der Ahe (Jr/Midfield), Connor Canale (Sr/Midfield), and Jack Ortlieb (Jr/Attack). The defense held the Tritons scoreless until there were just two minutes remaining in the half, and CDM took a 7-3 lead into the intermission.

"I thought we did a great job of playing unselfishly at both ends. We were patient and deliberate on offense and disciplined on defense. Michael made the big saves when we needed them."

"Taylor was terrific tonight (Taylor Epp Sr/Midfield). We knew face-offs and possessions were going to be a big key to this game. He and his wing guys did a great job all night of getting us opportunities and denying them the ball."

Epp won 10 of 18 draws (.555).

Keasey and Molnar added fourth quarter goals to seal the win for the Sea Kings.

"In these big games, it's always the little things, or the plays made by the less heralded guys, that makes the difference. That was certainly the case tonight. Our kids banded together and found a way."

With the win, CDM captures the school's first ever Orange County and Southern Section South Division championships. They advance to the Southern Section Championship and will play Palos Verdes (20-2) on Saturday, May 12 at 1:00 PM at Mission Viejo High School.
