Sea Kings tame visiting Mustangs 13-5

Senior midfielder Chris Von Der Ahe scored the game winner in CDM's 13-5 victory over Monte Vista
In what was billed as a match-up between two of California's top ten teams, Corona Del Mar stole top billing with an impressive 13-5 win over the visiting Mustangs of Monte Vista (Danville). With the win, the Sea Kings improve their record to against western region opponents to 2-0 (Fort Collins Unified and Monte Vista) and 7-0 overall.

The Mustangs looked impressive early, taking a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. But an illegal stick penalty, discovered in a random stick check of both teams at the end of the quarter, led to three unanswered Sea King goals and the visitors were never able to recover. CDM continued to roll, taking a 7-3 lead into the lockerroom. The Kings had scored eight straight goals and built a 10-3 lead before Monte Vista's notched another goal, its fourth of the game, near the end of the third quarter.

"I thought our kids showed remarkable poise and determination today," said CDM head coach G.W. Mix. "That was a very good team we beat today. They came out and punched us right in the mouth. It was great to see the intensity in our response."

"Nino (Chavez/So/Midfield) and Kaden (Ebbinga/Jr/Midfield) were terrific today. They really controlled the face-offs and made it very difficult for them to ever get anything going. We got terrific wing play all afternoon from Chad (Redfearn/So/Midfield), Brett (Greenlee/So/Defense), Chase (McElroy/Sr/Midfield) and Daniel (McCabe/Jr/Defense)."

The Sea Kings dominated face-offs for most of the day, winning 14 of 21 draws (.666%).

Jack Ortlieb (Sr/Attack) contributed four goals and an assist to lead all CDM scorers. Casey Mix (Sr/Attack) added three goals and an assist and fellow senior attackman Todd Kitzens finished the day with two goals and a pair of assists.

Once again, the Sea Kings enjoyed balanced scoring from its midfield units. Seniors Brett Nelson and Chris Von Der Ahe each scored a goal, along with Max Kline (So/midfield) and Ben Palitz (So/Midfield).

The defense is beginning to show signs of developing into a unit similar to last year's group. After a few early missteps, they were able to keep Monte Vista off balance for most of the game.

"I was proud of the defense," Mix added. "We had a number of two or three minute defensive stands where they came away empty. Its pretty hard to hold down the fort for that long. They did a great job. Hoyt (Crance/So/Goalie) came up big when we needed it."

Sophomore goalie Hoyt Crance made 13 saves (.722 SV%). The Sea King defense is allowing just 4.42 goals per game.

"We are fortunate to have a number of guys who are contributing for us at the defensive end. We are building some solid depth that will come in handy later in the spring."

Although the defensive unit features just one returning starter in sophomore Hugh Crance, they are improving with each game. Jack Harris (Sr/Defense) and Brian Leguay (So/Defense) join Crance at close defense. The defensive midfield seems to be more of a committee effort with long sticks Brett Greenlee (So/Defense) and Daniel McCabe (Jr/Defense), along with short sticks Chase McElroy (Sr/Midfield), Chad Redfearn (So/Midfield), Kaden Ebbinga (Jr/Midfield) and Colby Watson (Sr/Midfield). Watson, aka "Aquaman," and fellow CDM water polo standout Jake Wyatt, are beginning to make a splash in some of the Sea Kings' mid-season games.

Up next for CDM is the Battle of the Bay at Davidson Field (Newport Harbor HS) on Friday night at 7:00 PM. The JV will play prior to the varsity game at 5:00 PM. Monte Vista (7-2), in town from northern California on its spring break trip, plays Foothill on Thursday.
