CDM survives Servite 13-10, faces Huntington

Top-seeded CDM weathered what could only be described as a perfect storm on Tuesday evening, eventually defeating sixteenth seed Servite (7-10) 13-10 before a crowd of 1,100 at Sea King Field.

"If that was the 16th seed, I am scared to see what the 8 or 9 looks like on Thursday," Mix said immediately after the win. "That was a very competitive lacrosse team we just played. I think it was one of the top three teams we have played all year."

The Servite Friars came into the game with a deceiving 7-9 record, having finished fourth in the Trinity League behind league champion St.Margaret's (11-7 / 6-2, seeded 5th), JSerra (10-9 / 6-2, seeded 9th) and Santa Margarita (10-7 / 4-4, seeded 10th)

"We knew this was going to be a very tough game," Mix added. "They had beaten two top ten teams in the past ten days, not exactly the type of team the top seed wants or needs to see in the first round."

The Sea Kings jumped out to an impressive 5-0 lead at the end of the first period behind senior attackman Hunter Molnar's two goals, and tallies by Chris Von Der Ahe (Jr/Midfield), Casey Mix (Jr/Attack) and Michael Keasey (Sr/Midfield).

Junior attackman Jack Ortlieb increased the margin to six with a goal 39 seconds into the second quarter. It was shortly after that, things got interesting. Within the next two and a half minutes, the Friars had cut the margin in half, trailing the Kings 6-3. After two goals from Keasey, including one with less than a second remaining, CDM took an 8-5 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

In the second half, Servite continued to battle closer, twice cutting the margin to one goal. Behind six impressive saves from senior goalie Michael Ortlieb in the third period, Jack Ortlieb, Connor Canale (Sr/Midfield) and Chris Von Der Ahe each scored a goal, giving CDM an 11-9 lead going into the final quarter.

Molnar and Ortlieb scored again in the fourth to increase the lead to 13-9 with 4:09 remaining.

Senior face-off specialist Taylor Epp played a significant role in the win, winning 13 of the 19 draws he took, allowing the Sea Kings to gain valuable possessions down the stretch.

Michael Ortlieb finished with thirteen saves.

CDM faces #8 seed Huntington in the quarter-finals on Thursday at 4:00 PM at CDM. The Sea Kings defeated Huntington 12-4 in their previous meeting on April 21.
